+ Dance Recital 2010

We are proud to announce the annual STAR Dance Recital:

Thursday, April 29 at 6:30pm
Friday, April 30 at 6:30pm
Saturday, May 1 at 1:30pm

All performances are held at The Little Theatre On The Square and each show will be approximately 90 minutes long.

On the day of the recital, the theatre auditorium doors will open 30 minutes prior to the curtain time for seating.  Dancers should always enter through the back (north) door of the theatre, and you may walk them in to the stage (Intro & Beginning students) or help them find their dressing room (grades 1 and up).  During the show, they will remain in their dressing rooms with our parent volunteers & instructors having fun with games & activities until their class is called to the stage and for the finale at the end of the show.

Here, you’ll find information on tickets, costumes, recital hair and makeup, recital photographs, dress rehearsals, parent volunteering, recital pre-planning, the day of the recitals, recital DVDs, program advertising, bouquet orders and the event calendar.

American Express, Discover, Master Card, and Visa are accepted.

All sales are final. NO REFUNDS

EXCHANGE POLICY:
If you are unable to attend the performance date/time you have tickets for and need to reschedule, a 24-hour notice prior to the performance for which you are holding tickets is required. Exchanges will be honored as long as tickets are available. No exchanges are allowed the day of the show. All tickets reserved together must be exchanged together. We do not honor exchanges for performances that have already passed or exchanges for another production. Every effort will be made to provide you with the best seats as long as there are seats still available. If you wish to make exchanges while attending a performance, we ask that you please wait and do this at intermission, rather than before the show.

Complimentary Tickets:
Each dance student will receive two complimentary tickets for the recital.  These cannot be redeemed until ALL outstanding class fees & costume fees have been paid in full to the Sullivan Civic Center.  Payment for dance classes and costumes cannot be paid at the Little Theatre ticket office.  To redeem your child’s 2 complimentary tickets please give the ticket office associate your child’s name along with the number of additional tickets you’d like, and they will handle your order.

COSTUME INFORMATION

Once your child’s costume balance has been paid in full, they belong to you and are your responsibility.  You may also need to alter/take in your child’s costume so that they fit accurately.  Please keep in mind that dance costumes are made in limited sizes and there is often a very big discrepancy even between two sizes.  We will have to err on the larger size to ensure that your child’s costume will fit.  It is much easier to take in a costume than to alter one that is too small.  Please keep your child’s costume clean and neat prior to the performances.  Do not wash them until after all performances are over, please use a steamer (not iron) to remove any wrinkles and any pancake/platter/short tutus should be hung upside down by the crotch to keep them from relaxing.

RECITAL HAIR & MAKEUP

Hair:
Uniform hairstyles are requested for all dancers.  All female students must wear their hair in a slick, tight bun.  No bangs, please.  Dancers with short hair must pull their hair away from the face and slick it down.  ‘U’ shaped hairpins work better than bobby pins when securing buns.  Hairnets also help hold your bun neatly after the pins are in place.  There are many different ways to do ballet buns but I have provided a couple links you can try (enter the following text into your browser’s URL):

Makeup:
All female students are required to wear stage makeup for the recital.  You will need the following for your dancer: foundation makeup (to match skin tone), brown eye shadow, brown or black eyeliner, brown or black mascara, plum blush, and plum lipstick (not pink or red).  Students ages 14+ may wear false eyelashes but they are not required.  Please err on the heavier side when applying stage makeup, but please keep it age appropriate for your daughter.  No rhinestones or glitter, please, unless it’s applied by your dancer’s instructor.

Please remember to remove all nail polish, jewelry and temporary tattoos before photographs, dress rehearsal & the performances.

RECITAL PHOTOS

This year, class and individual photos will be held on Sunday, April 25th at Dickens Studio of Photography located above the Coffee Bean (2 E. Harrison St. – the NW corner of the square).  Please make sure that your dancer is in costume with hair and makeup done before the sitting and remember to bring all of your costume accessories, shoes & tights (if necessary) with you.  Each class sitting will take approximately 15 minutes.  Phil Dickens of Dickens Photography will be handling all of the photo orders & will contact you when they are available to pick up from him.  Please make sure that your order forms are filled out prior to your arrival and that your checks are made out to Dickens Studio of Photography.  You will need to pick up an order form from your student’s dance instructor closer to the event, they will not be mailed to you.  You are obviously not required to purchase class photos, but please attend the sitting for your child’s fellow classmates.

PARENT VOLUNTEERS

Parent volunteering back stage is a great way to understand how the recital process works from behind the scenes.  It’s very easy and a great way to spend some time with your dancer and her classmates during the performance.  If you are interested in volunteering during one of the three performances, please fill out the Parent Volunteer Form by April 15th and mail or drop it off at:

The Little Theatre On The Square
Attn: Heather D. Johnson
16 E. Harrison
Sullivan, IL 61951

I will ideally need 5 parent volunteers for each performance.  You will not need a ticket for the day(s) that your are volunteering for (because you’ll be backstage, of course). Volunteers will need to stay in the assigned dressing room or location before and during the entire performance (even during your child’s number – to keep an eye on the other children in the dressing room).

RECITAL PRE-PLANNING

Unfortunately, the dance recital isn’t a one-day activity. Try gathering all costumes, accessories, shoes, and makeup several days in advance so you’ll know if something is missing or isn’t right. Make a checklist of your child’s routines, listing their costumes, tights, shoes, and any accessories and refer to it to make sure you have all your supplies before going to the theatre.  Please write your child’s name in her/his dance shoes and in all costumes and accessories!  Bring at least one extra pair of tights. Also bring extra hair gel, hairnets, bobby pins, and hairspray. Other handy extras include:

  • Baby wipes/Shout wipes (to fix makeup mistakes or wash hands)
  • Safety Pins (For repairs)
  • Nail Polish Remover (in case you forgot to take it off already)
  • Extra makeup (for older students)
  • A quiet game, book or activity (to keep your young one occupied during the recitals)

THE DAY OF THE RECITAL

Arrival Times:

All students in grades 1 and older (example Jazz/Hip-Hop 1, Ballet 3, etc.) should arrive at the theatre 45 minutes prior to the curtain time and go directly to their dressing room:
Thursday, April 29 at 5:45pm
Friday, April 30 at 5:45pm
Saturday, May 1 at 12:45pm

All Intro & Beginning (Beginning Tap, Beginning Ballet, etc.) grade students may arrive 25 minutes prior to the start time and go directly to the stage (see their information below):
Thursday, April 29 at 6:05pm
Friday, April 30 at 6:05pm
Saturday, May 1 at 1:05pm

All Intro & Beginning students should go directly to the stage upon arrival with their dance bags and all of their belongings.  Please arrive in costume with hair and makeup done.  Please write your child’s name in her/his dance shoes & costume & accessories.  Sue Weaver will be in charge of keeping them company during their wait and will escort them to their dressing room upstairs before the show begins.  They will not be unattended.

Behavior:

Please help us by encouraging your child to be on her/his best behavior during the recital and rehearsals.  It is a very complicated and time consuming process to combine over 120 students into one recital and patience and kindness are appreciated from all that are involved.

After the Recital(s):
Once each show is completed, your dancer will be waiting for you on stage.  You may pick them up there, get their belongings from their dressing rooms and leave the theatre.  Children will not be allowed outside unattended, please come inside to pick them up.  You are welcome to take photographs of your dancer at that time as well, but please remember to not take photographs during the actual performances, the flashes are dangerous when children are on the dark stage.

RECITAL DVDS

We will be taping the recital and DVDs will be available for you to purchase for $10 each.  Please fill out the DVD order form along with a check made out to The Little Theatre On The Square and hand them in to your dancer’s instructor in class before April 15.  These will be available for pick up approximately 2 weeks after the dance recital at the Little Theatre Box Office.  Don’t forget to pick them up!

PROGRAM ADVERTISEMENTS

This year, we are excited to offer families the opportunity to create a personalized ad for their dancer in the dance recital program.  It’s not only a great way to show her/him your appreciation for their hard work, but it’s also a great way to support the STAR Dance Academy, which is a nonprofit program just like the theatre.  You can also buy advertisements to promote your family business or a friend’s business.  We’ve included three advertising contracts along with an example of what the ads look like in the program, be sure to submit these no later than April 15!  It’s a very special way to show your dancer how proud you are of them!

FLOWER BOUQUETS

We are please to offer new and exciting flower bouquets this year for you to give to your dancer after the recital.  The bouquets will be gorgeous and glittery and are a great way to reward your dancer for all of their hard work and the proceeds also support our dance program!  Once you’ve placed your order, they will be made fresh and ready for you to pick up at the box office on the recital day(s) of your choice.  Each bouquet is $10.00.  Please fill out the form provided and submit to your child’s instructor or myself by April 15.
